Training courses

Heart of Asia has been funding three week training courses in simple healthcare at Dzongsar Menkhang (the Tibetan herbal medicine hospital.) Tibetan speaking volunteer health workers from the UK share their knowledge with selected people from Dzongsar-Meshu and from Dru gu.

We aim to empower local men and women with basic hygiene, nutrition, first aid, maternity and child healthcare skills to create a network of barefoot health workers who can both help and educate their communities.

£1,200 will pay for a three week training course at Dzongsar Menkhang.

  • Ten people donating £10 per month will pay for this.

CHIME DORJI'S TESTIMONIAL:

Chime Dorji is a monk from Dzongsar Monastery. He attended the Healthcare training organised by Youdon Lhamo for Heart of Asia at Dzongsar Menkhang in 2006. Around 15 women, men, monks and nuns from townships and villages in the Meshu area participated in the 10-day training, which addressed issues of Safer Motherhood, hygiene and disease prevention.

“Tibetan people living in rural areas lack knowledge about safer motherhood, and due to poor transportation it is very difficult to get up to date medical support for women in childbirth in these areas. However the training taught us ways to have safer motherhood using local materials that rural people can easily access. Therefore the training was very helpful, as it has decreased the death rate of mothers and babies in this area. I say thank you to Heart of Asia on behalf of all my community members.”

Chime Dorji then explained to us how he had saved the life of a baby whilst helping a nomad woman give birth. He had been on a truck in a remote area of Drayab County, TAR, when the woman on board went into labour and he was able to help her have a safe delivery. He also told us how two women from his village approached him for advice regarding their infertility problems. He advised them on methods that would help them become pregnant which he learned from Youdon Lhamo’s training on behalf of Heart of Asia.

DR KARPO'S TESTIMONIAL:

Dr Karpo, son of Dr Lodre Phuntsok and a Tibetan Herbal Medicine Doctor, is Director of Yuthok YondenGonpo Medical Association, our partner organisation in Dzongsar/Meshu area.

“The projects and training courses that Heart of Asia have consistently sponsored have helped a lot with healthcare issues related to Safer Motherhood, hygiene and knowledge of disease prevention in the Meshu area.

For example, it is considered very shameful if women and girls talk about feminine health problems to religious figures, such as a monk. However since the monk Chime Dorji (who attended Heart of Asia’s training course at Dzongsar Menkhang in 2006) was able to successfully advise local women regarding their fertility problems local women now regard him as a health care consultant.

As the training courses were so beneficial we would like to extend the target area and develop similar trainings in other Tibetan areas, using those already trained to train other local people.

I want to say thank you very much on behalf of YYMA and the whole population of Meshu area.

The Dzongsar Medical Emergency Fund has brought a lot of benefit. There are many patients who need expensive treatments to help them but have no access to the money needed, and the fund has been used to assist them – saving the lives of many people".
