Heart of Asia: INDIA

SUPPORTALOO!

At the request of the Indian people of Bheth Jhikli village (next to Tashi Jong) in Himachal Pradesh, northern India, Heart of Asia has started a new project funding the provision of toilets. We hope to extend this project to help other villages in the surrounding area.
We are helping families in the village who are below the poverty line and who cannot afford to build their own toilets. We have already funded the building of  28 traditional style loos, 26 of which are completed.

"At least 76% of all rural people in South Asia do not have access to basic sanitation facilities. The practice of open defecation by the majority of people in this region is one of the most serious environmental threats to public health. Open defecation and the failure to confine excreta safely are primary factors that contribute to the spread of disease and infection through the bacteriological contamination of water sources and the transmission of pathogens through the faecal-oral route. Improved hygiene practices by entire communities, including the use of sanitary toilets, can effectively break this cycle of disease transmission."

From “Water and Sanitation Program-South Asia”:

The cost of a traditional toilet is about £200. The price lowers the more the family concerned are able to provide free manual labour as their contribution.

  • A one off donation of £200 or 10 people giving £20 each will pay for a traditional toilet for an Indian village in Himachal Pradesh.

Volunteer!

Our project manager Rana is inviting people who would like to help Heart of Asia in a practical way and who would also like to discover the unique culture of a beautiful village in the Himalayan foothills of India, to come and volunteer in Bheth Jhikli and surrounding villages. Rana can provide a platform for any kind of volunteer work: you can help to build toilets, teach English to local children, plant trees or share your unique skill with local people.
Rana will organise local home-stays, and also trekking for all ability levels, Buddhist tours and cultural visits for volunteers.
Let us know if you are interested!
