A CLINIC FOR THOPA COUNTY
At the request of Dru gu Choegyal Rinpoche Heart of Asia plans to establish a simple clinic in Thopa County, TAR.
Located west of Chamdo, Thopa County is a predominantly nomadic region with a sparse population spread out over a wide area. There is little, if any healthcare within these poor communities. There is presently just one elderly Tibetan Herbal Medicine Doctor, working from his tent home, serving a nomadic population of 7,000 people spread over 7 valleys. It may take as long as 2 days on a mule or yak, crossing difficult terrain, for a patient to reach the doctor – that is if they are well enough to travel..
Funding is required for staffing and stocking a clinic in the newly opened school building in order to provide simple health care for the community, with an emphasis on an improvement in maternal and infant health. The aim is for the clinic staff to gradually train a number of suitable local people in simple healthcare techniques, to enable them to perform outreach work – eventually creating a mobile health care set up.
It is proposed that Heart of Asia would undertake initially to pay for the ongoing staff salaries of one doctor and one nurse, while the community would provide the volunteer nurse/health workers and other support. Heart of Asia would also fund 2 hornless yaks (and their feed) for transport, simple medical equipment, clinic furniture, and consumable medical items. £6,500 would cover the cost of setting up the clinic.

- Ten people donating £55 a month will fund the clinic set up.
- Ten people donating £35 a month will pay for the clinic’s annual running costs.
